Fremont Troll
Lurking under the north end of the Aurora Bridge in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle is this car-clutching creature known locally as the Fremont Troll. Weighing in at a staggering 13,000 pounds, this 18-foot tall concrete colossus was the brainchild of a UW professor, his girlfriend, and two of his students, after his design won an art competition in 1990. Now this much-photographed sculpture is a local treasure where climbing is encouraged. And, yes, that is a real Volkswagen Beetle in his grasp.
