Lake Quinault
Nestled into the glacial-carved Quinault Valley at the southwest corner of Olympic National Park, Lake Quinault is surrounded by temperate rain forest, one of only three temperate coniferous rain forests in the Western Hemisphere. Here you can find the largest Sitka Spruce tree in the world, the largest Western Red Cedar, largest Douglas Fir, and other champion conifer trees in the Valley of the Giants.
This popular getaway is home to miles of beautiful hiking trails that wind through the rainforest and take you past scenic waterfalls. Some are located within the national park, but many can be accessed at the south side of the lake. The Pacific Ranger District office on the south shore of Lake Quinault is a great place to obtain maps and information on these trails, and is located just across the road from the general store.
There are a number of places to stay when visiting Lake Quinault, including the historic Lake Quinault Lodge on the south shore, a grand and rustic lodge built in 1926 that features a majestic fireplace, stunning lake views, and antique ambiance. Other lodging options include the Lochaerie Resort, Quinault River Inn, and Rain Forest Resort Village. If camping is your thing, there are three forest service campgrounds along the south shore of Lake Quinault, as well RV camping at Quinault River Inn and Rain Forest Resort Village.
Kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding are popular pastimes on the serene waters of Lake Quinault, and rentals can be found at Lake Quinault Lodge during summer months. Boat tours are also available on the lake, where you can view wildlife such as eagles and river otters, learn about the Quinault area, and enjoy beautiful vistas.
When planning your visit to Lake Quinault, whether you’re coming for the day or plan to stay awhile, keep in mind that while most of the lodging are open year-round, the campgrounds and some activities and destinations are seasonal and may not be open outside of the summer months. One thing’s for certain, though – however you plan to spend your time at Lake Quinault, you’re sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
